We are a charity based in Caerphilly (South Wales). We were established in 1995 with the sole aim of ensuring that people with learning disabilities have the opportunity to live full, valued lives and be active, visible participants in their communities.
We want people with learning disabilities to realise their full potential. Our volunteer Advocates provide long-term friendship, support and information for people with learning disabilities to help them overcome barriers they will face.
We achieve this by creating Citizen Advocacy partnerships. These partnerships are made up of a Partner (a person with a learning disability) and an Advocate (a volunteer):
Partners may need the support of an Advocate because:
- They have no supportive relationships and are socially isolated
- They are being challenged by a life threatening activity or situation
- They are receiving a service which is diminishing their opportunities for personal growth
- There is evidence to suggest that they are being ill-treated or abused
Advocates:
- are ordinary members of the local community who vary greatly in their skills and experiences
- come from all walks of life and can represent a wide range of cultures
- do not require formal qualifications or any particular prior experience.
The one thing they have in common is a willingness to enter into a supportive friendship with a person who has a learning disability.
How an Advocate can help?
- They can help their Partner to express their views in meetings or generally with other people
- They can help their Partner in problem solving
- They can help their Partner to make choices that benefit them
- They can support their Partner in meeting new people and getting out into their community
- They can help their Partner gain access to support which they are entitled.
